When Should You Winterize Your Car in Memphis?
Memphis doesn't get blizzards, but that's part of the problem. Drivers here don't think about winter prep because it "doesn't get that cold." Then an ice storm rolls through in January, temperatures drop below 20°F, and the shop phone rings nonstop with dead batteries and cracked radiator hoses. Every year. Like clockwork.
The smart move is to winterize in late October to early November — before the cold arrives, not after it strands you.
Memphis Winter Checklist
- Battery Test
- Memphis summer heat is what actually kills batteries — the cold just finishes them off. A load test in October tells you if yours will make it through winter.
- Antifreeze / Coolant Check
- We test the freeze point and concentration. If your coolant hasn't been changed in 3+ years, it may not protect below freezing anymore.
- Tire Tread Depth
- Worn tires on wet or icy Memphis roads are dangerous. We measure tread depth and check for uneven wear that could mean an alignment issue.
- Wiper Blades
- Memphis summer sun bakes wiper blades brittle. Replace them before the first freezing rain — you'll need them to actually work.
- Heater & Defroster Test
- If your heater blows lukewarm or your defroster can't clear the windshield, there may be a coolant flow issue or a blend door problem. Find out now, not in December.
What Winterization Costs in Memphis
At Snell, a full winterization service runs $89–$149 depending on what your vehicle needs. That covers the battery test, coolant check, tire inspection, wiper blade assessment, heater and defroster check, and a general under-hood inspection.
If we find something that needs fixing — a weak battery, low coolant, worn wipers — we'll quote you before doing any additional work. No surprises.
The #1 Winter Breakdown in Memphis: Dead Batteries
Here's how it works: Memphis summers routinely hit 95°F+. That heat accelerates the chemical degradation inside your battery. By October, a battery that's 3–4 years old may be running at 60% capacity — but it still starts fine because warm air is easy on batteries.
Then the first real cold snap hits. Temperatures drop below 30°F. Cold thickens engine oil and makes the starter work harder. That weakened battery can't deliver enough cranking amps, and you're stuck in your driveway at 7 AM.
The fix is simple: get your battery tested in October. A load test takes five minutes and tells you exactly how much life is left. If it's marginal, replace it now for $129–$189 installed — instead of paying for an emergency tow and battery replacement in January.
Emergency Kit for Memphis Ice Storms
Memphis gets at least one ice event most winters. Keep this in your vehicle from November through February:
-
✓
Blanket or sleeping bag
If you're stuck, your car's heater won't run forever. A blanket keeps you warm without draining the battery.
-
✓
Phone charger (portable battery)
A dead phone when you're stranded is a real problem. Keep a charged power bank in the glove box.
-
✓
Sand or kitty litter
Pour it under your tires for traction on ice. A small bag goes a long way.
-
✓
Flashlight with fresh batteries
If you're stuck after dark, you need to see and be seen.
-
✓
Ice scraper
Memphis drivers never own one until they need one. Buy a $5 scraper now and keep it in the trunk.
"Memphis gets maybe two real cold snaps a year, and that's when everything breaks. Battery dies, coolant's weak, wipers are shot. I always tell people — come in around October, let us check the stuff that's gonna leave you stranded in January."
